Using design as a medium to enhance an audience's interaction with a narrative, he focuses on how the interplay between the observer and the art they're viewing can create great storytelling. A master of design through light, he is also experienced in design for projections, scenery, and sound. Always looking to the future of design, he is a practiced developer and programmer, and is working with the application of game design, virtual, and augmented reality for immersive narrative experiences.
Derek also currently acts as the Producing Artistic Director and co-founder of Dorothy’s Friends Theatre Company, a production company at the University of Southern California dedicated to telling the positive stories of the LGBTQ+ community onstage. While in this role, he produced and acted as lighting designer on both She Kills Monsters and the west coast collegiate premiere of Fun Home, and served as director and writer on dftc’s devised experience (i’ll) tell your story, soon to be available to listen to as a podcast.
Derek’s favorite topics of conversation include new recipes for baked goods, interesting audio dramas or informational podcasts, and obscure trivia fun facts. He’s also passionate about tabletop roleplaying games, and their role as pieces of engaging collaborate storytelling. Current favorite games are Dungeons and Dragons, Ten Candles, PbtA Monster of the Week, Dread, and Call of Cthulhu.
